21 Aug Faith leaders fight for gay marriage in Hawaii
Religious leaders in Hawaii are showing just because you have faith, it does not mean you cannot fight for equal marriage.
In the island US state, more than two dozen faith leaders of various religions have signed a resolution calling for marriage rights for same-sex couples.
Reverend Doctor Jonipher Kupono Kwong of the First Unitarian Church has said it is ‘all about standing on the right side of history’.
The groups, which include leaders from Jewish, Methodist and other faiths, said they will continue speaking out in favor of same-sex marriage.
‘We will keep doing it until we’re all prayed out,’ Kwong said, as reported by the Associated Press.
The resolution asks Hawaii lawmakers to extend civil marriage benefits to same-sex couples. Hawaii currently has a civil unions law, but some say it doesn’t go far enough in fully recognizing couples as married.
Barack Obama, who was born in Hawaii, became the first sitting US president to back same-sex marriage while in office. His actions were the trigger for a widespread fight for equality.
