Bullets sent to French gay mayor over his plans to get married

A gay mayor in France is the latest politician to be sent death threats in the mail.

Thierry Speitel, mayor of Sigoldsheim in the Haut-Rhin area of eastern France, was sent bullets through the post this week over his equal marriage support.

Speitel, who is gay himself, said he was shocked by the incident and described the act as ‘odious’, The Local reports.

In an interview with the Derniers Nouvelles d’Alsace, Speitel said he would love to marry his partner, adopt children and slammed the homophobic attacks in recent months.

He was then sent a copy of his newspaper interview scrawled with handwritten homophobic insults, along with the bullets.

Speitel is the latest in the run of politicians being sent death threats.

Before the French government voted fully in favor of marriage equality, the Socialist president of France’s National Assembly Claude Bartolone was sent a threatening letter containing gunpowder.

The one-page letter warned: ‘You wanted war, and you’ve got it.’

It came after deputies Sylviane Sulbeau and Hugues Fourage were sent letters from anti-gay marriage extremists, threatening to kidnap and kill them or their loved ones.
