STATE MPs will vote before the end of the year on law reforms that would decriminalise prostitution.The vote will also cover reforms that would ban minors from sex work and prevent brothels operating within 200m of schools, childcare centres and churches.
The controversial move would ensure sex workers were regarded as legitimate workers with the same industrial rights and responsibilities as other workers.
Labor MP Stephanie Key will introduce a private member’s Bill after talks with sex workers and other interested parties over the next six weeks. She will outline proposals for her Bill during a rally today of sex workers on the steps of Parliament House, marking International Whores Day.
Five attempts between 1980 and 2001 to decriminalise prostitution in SA have either been voted down or lapsed in Parliament.
