A Russian gay couple has traveled over 4,000 miles to be able to say their vows legally. Andrew Nassonov and his husband Igor wed in Washington DC on Saturday (18 October).

 

The refugees, who fled to the US over persecution in Russia, said their dream of being recognized as a married couple in love has finally come true.

 

‘We met almost four and a half years ago and immediately fell in love,’ Nassonov said on Facebook.

 

‘Since then we have not only dreamed about living together, but also about how to become a real family. Today we can finally say: We – the family!’

 

The activist added: ‘A year ago we could not even imagine what our lives would be: that we will go to America and that we have entered into a valid marriage. But today, this is our reality.’

 

Nassonov thanked all of the people in the US who have helped them, paying tribute to everyone who ‘fought every day for our right to be happy.’

 

Back in Russia, Nassonov and his partner lived in the southwestern Russian city of Voronezh.An activist, he launched a campaign to end the ‘gay propaganda’ law. Because of this, he was targeted by thugs and received multiple death threats.

 

During one picket against homophobia, he was pelted with snowballs and was severely beaten. Nassonov was hospitalized for several days after this.

 

Following this, the couple decided to go to a place which cherished freedom, tolerance and equality. Arriving in July, they were granted asylum and allowed to live happily and openly.
