We’re proud of our gay dad, say sons of Peru’s first out congressman

Newly-out Peruvian politician Carlos Bruce has been congratulated for coming out by his two sons, saying his sexuality does not bother them at all.

Last week Bruce, a congressman in the capital Lima, became the first openly gay member of Congress in Peruvian history.

Since his coming out was published in newspaper El Comercio, his two sons Alex and Paul, have said they don’t care about his sexuality and they don’t judge him.

‘I’m not political, but I am surprised that some people want to impose their own rules.’

They say their circle of friends actually admire their father for his distinguished job.

In my circle of friends, there’s no problem. On the contrary, they congratulate him,’ said one of the sons.

They have also said they support same-sex marriage in the Latin American country, and believe there is no sense in the argument gay marriages will destroy the traditional image of a family.

‘There are broken homes with heterosexual parents,’ said Alex.

On18 May Bruce, who has been campaigning for same-sex civil unions in Peru, came out to the largely Catholic country on the front page of national newspaper El Comercio with the headline: ‘I’m gay and proud.’

LGBTI rights group Lima Homosexual Movement congratulated him on making history.

‘With this act of bravery Bruce becomes the first openly gay politician in office in the history of Peru,’ they said.

Bruce’s opening up about his sexuality has also been subject to online scrutiny, death threats and backlash on social media outlets.

Facebook user Abel Meneses Castro wrote: ‘It’s disgusting! Kill him!’

‘They should give him the death penalty as they do in Russia’ wrote Artega Campos Juan Jesus.

In April, Bruce supported his campaign for marriage eqaulity with a petition of 10,000 signatures.
