An action to mark Transgender Day of Remembrance in Skopje

The activists from the organizations LGBT United and Women’s Alliance made a symbolic action to mark the Transgender Day of Remembrance in Skopje. They set up a banner and lit candles in the entrance of the Old Turkish Bazaar in Skopje.

– As the day is marked throughout the world, we have decided to make a symbolic action to mark this day in Skopje as well. We wanted to remind the public of all the transgender persons who were killed only because they were transgender – said Bekim Asani, the executive director of LGBT United.

Asani reminded that the transgender persons in Macedonia live in miserable conditions.

– They are forced to live a double life and to keep the fact that they are transgender in secrecy. They are targets of continuous discrimination and are unrecognized by the majority. Out of all the groups which belong in the category of LGBT, the transgender persons represent the most endangered social group – Asani added.

Transgender Day of Remembrance, which occurs annually on November 20, is a day to memorialize those who have been killed as a result of transphobia, or the hatred or fear of transgender and gender non-conforming people, and acts to bring attention to the continued violence endured by the transgender community.
